Getting an image into the right shape is usually a combination of small jobs: make it smaller, cut away the edges, turn it the right way up, then maybe put a frame around it. Resize, crop or both?
Resizing changes how many pixels the whole picture has. Nothing is cut off; the image just gets smaller or larger, and with the aspect ratio locked it keeps its proportions. Cropping removes part of the picture to change what is in the frame or its shape — a square from a landscape photo, a 16:9 banner from a tall one. If you need a specific shape and a specific size, crop first to get the shape, then resize to get the exact dimensions.

A sensible order of operations
When an image needs several changes, the order matters for quality. Rotate and crop first, while you still have all the original pixels to work with. Resize next, so the final dimensions are exact. Compress last, because every later edit would otherwise re-encode an already-compressed file and add more loss. After each step, the result can be passed straight to the next tool without downloading it first.
Exact sizes for social media
