How to make Android app icons
- Drop your logo into the box above. A square PNG of 1024 × 1024 or larger on a transparent background works best.
- Pick the background colour that fills the icon behind the logo.
- Set the logo size in dp and watch the previews: circle, squircle and rounded square are the shapes most launchers cut icons into, and the dashed ring is the 66 dp safe zone.
- Leave the monochrome layer on and check the Themed icon preview. If it shows only a blob, change where the themed icon is drawn from (see below).
- Click Download ZIP and copy
android/resinto your module'ssrc/main/resfolder.
Need the iPhone icons too? Switch on iOS above the previews and the same ZIP also gets an
AppIcon.appiconset for Xcode, or use the combined
app icon generator.
What is in the ZIP
| File | What it is for | Sizes |
|---|---|---|
mipmap-*/ic_launcher_foreground.png | The logo layer of the adaptive icon, on transparency | 108 dp: 108, 162, 216, 324, 432 px |
mipmap-*/ic_launcher_monochrome.png | The themed-icon layer for Android 13+ | Same as the foreground |
mipmap-*/ic_launcher.png, ic_launcher_round.png | Finished square and round icons for Android 7.1 and older | 48 dp: 48, 72, 96, 144, 192 px |
mipmap-anydpi-v26/ic_launcher.xml (+ _round) | Tells Android 8+ which layers make up the icon | — |
values/ic_launcher_background.xml | The background colour as a colour resource | — |
play-store-512.png | The icon for your Play Console store listing | 512 × 512 px, 32-bit PNG |
The five density folders are mdpi, hdpi, xhdpi,
xxhdpi and xxxhdpi, at 1, 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 pixels per dp. The XML
in mipmap-anydpi-v26 is what current phones actually read; the finished PNG
icons are only used by Android 7.1 and older, so you can leave them out if your
minSdk is 26 or higher.
Why themed icons often come out as a plain circle
When a user turns on themed icons in Android 13 or later, the launcher recolours every app that has a monochrome layer. It does not look at that layer's colours at all: according to Android's documentation it uses only the alpha channel — where the layer is see-through and where it is not — and paints the solid parts in the theme colour.
That is a problem for the most common kind of logo: a letter or symbol inside a coloured circle or square. We made such a test logo, a white letter A on a blue circle on a transparent background, and read the monochrome layer out of the downloaded ZIP pixel by pixel:
| Monochrome layer made from | Letter (alpha) | Circle around it (alpha) | Themed icon shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| A grey copy of the logo | 255 | 255 | A plain filled disc |
| The light parts of the logo | 255 | 0 | The letter A |
A grey copy is what many icon generators produce: the colours change, but the letter is exactly as solid as the circle around it, so after tinting nothing tells them apart. Here you choose where the themed icon comes from: the logo's outline (right for a logo that is already a single shape), its light parts (a pale symbol on a dark badge) or its dark parts (a dark symbol on a light badge). When your logo's outline is one solid shape with detail inside, the tool points this out, and the themed preview shows the result in the theme colours before you download anything.
Getting the size right in dp
Every layer of an adaptive icon is 108 × 108 dp. Launchers show the middle 72 dp through a mask and use the rest for motion effects, and only the central 66 dp circle is guaranteed to survive every mask shape. Google suggests keeping the logo between 48 and 66 dp across. The size slider works in those same units and says when the logo crosses the safe zone or the visible edge, so a wide wordmark does not lose its first and last letters on a phone with circular icons. An image that already has its own background fills the whole visible area instead.
The Play Store icon
Google Play asks for a 512 × 512 pixel, 32-bit PNG of up to 1024 KB.
Upload it as a full square: Play rounds the corners and adds the shadow on its own, so
corners drawn into the image end up doubled. The ZIP's play-store-512.png is the
same design as the launcher icon, as a full-bleed square. For a website favicon from the same
logo, use the favicon generator.
Your logo is processed inside the browser and never uploaded. More tools for sizing and converting images are on the resize and crop tools page.
